Articles carry a quality rating on their talk page. The scale is a working tool for prioritising effort, not a badge; ratings are assigned by any editor and revised freely.
The classes
| Class | Criterion |
|---|---|
| Stub | A definition and little else. Under about 300 words. |
| Start | Some real content, but major aspects missing or unsourced. |
| C | Substantial, but with gaps, uneven sourcing or structural problems. |
| B | Complete in coverage, sourced throughout, no major omission. Usable by a non-specialist. |
| A | Thorough, well sourced, well written, and reviewed by an editor other than the principal author. |
| Featured | A-class, plus a formal review passed on comprehensiveness, neutrality and prose. |
What raises a rating
In practice the step from C to B is almost always about sourcing density and about whether the article's numbers carry their comparators. The step from B to A is almost always about prose and about whether the lead genuinely summarises the article.
Importance
Separately from quality, articles carry a rough importance rating within their topic area, used to decide where limited reviewing effort goes. A high-importance stub is a worse problem than a low-importance C-class article.
