Introduction

The GLP-1 receptor agonists are engineered peptides and, more recently, small molecules that reproduce the actions of the endogenous incretin hormone GLP-1 while resisting the enzyme that normally destroys it within minutes. The class began as a twice-daily injection for type 2 diabetes and now includes weekly agents with cardiovascular and renal outcome data, oral formulations, and constructs that engage two or three receptors at once.
